*Accepting New Patients*I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), with 10 years of experience in trauma-informed therapy and public health. I approach therapy with an eclectic style that is client-centered, collaborative, that is aimed at helping clients to better understand their history and how those experiences (be it from when they were 3 years old, or yesterday) are influencing their reactions and responses to situations of today, so that they can feel more empowered in their daily lives.
I have training in several therapeutic modalities, including Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) & Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprograming (EMDR). I pull from theories on attachment, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness and Self-Compassion, and public health to inform my work with clients. Plus, I think a little humor can go a long way!
Prior to joining Red Couch Counseling, I worked in community mental health and a trauma-treatment program in Chicago for six years, specializing in complex trauma and survivors of violent crime. After returning to Iowa in 2016, I spent four years working in public health where I specialized in injury and violence prevention and response. My years in public health enrich my clinical practice as I use the Social Ecological Model (SEM) to understand how people both interact with, and are affected by, factors at each level of the SEM: Individual (biological and personal history factors); Relationship (the close relationships that contribute to their experience); Community (the places and spaces in which people live, work, play, and learn); Societal (social/cultural norms, and the policies/practices of the broader society).
My job as a therapist is not to rescue people, nor to tell them what to do. It is my job to help someone gain a better understanding of themselves, to recognize and tap into the resources and protective factors they already have going for them, to help develop skills to better tolerate (not distract from and deny) emotions, and to integrate all parts of themselves in order to live the life they want. Thank you for considering me for that journey!
